The higher elevations consist of White Navajo Sandstone spotted with islands of Ponderosa Pines and miniature Manzanita bushes. The lower canyons of the Escalante dip into the classic high wall red rock of the Windgate formation.
GCNRA is a maze of high wall red rock canyons and endless slickrock domes. Many of the branches of the lower Escalante River and the river canyon itself are located in this amazing recreation area.
